Guy L. Cot

Guy L. Cotb. August 30, 1925, Ottawa, Ontario; d. 1995

A long-time National Film Board director, producer and writer, Guy Cot also made important contributions to the development of Canadian cinema as founder or co-founder of several vital organizations, including the Canadian Federation of Film Societies, LAssociation professionnelle des cinastes du Qubec, La CinmathPque Qubcoise, the Canadian Film Archives and the Montreal Film Festival (a predecessor of the Montreal World Film Festival). A staunch devotee of film analysis, he wrote many articles on Canadian and Quebec cinema and compiled one of the largest film reference libraries in Canada.

Cot became interested in film while studying chemistry as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford University in 1947. The universitys film society allowed him the opportunity to make his first films, including the award-winning abstract ballet short Between Two Worlds (1952). He joined the production branch of the NFB upon his return to Canada in 1952 and soon began directing films. He served as the NFBs European representative in 1954 and 1955, then worked as a location manager and editor before producing and directing a number of documentary shorts in the late fifties and early sixties.

As an editor, Cot worked on Roman Kroitor and Wolf Koenigs Lonely Boy (1962); as a producer, he contributed to many significant films, including Pierre Perraults Le RPgne du jour (1966), Les Voitures deau (1968) and Un pays sans bon sens! (1970), Anne Claire Poiriers De mPre en fille (1967), Pierre Bernier and Jacques Leducs LB ou ailleurs (1969), and Michel Brault and Perraults LAcadie lAcadie?!? (1971). As a director, his pre-1970 films are in a traditional documentary style and are somewhat romantic in tone; his later feature documentaries are more judgmental and take a clear position in relation to their subjects.

Cot worked as a film critic in Ottawa and at Oxford and wrote numerous articles for various film reviews and journals. In honour of his film legacy and his dedication to the study and promotion of the film medium, the reference library at La CinmathPque Qubcoise in Montreal bears his name (MdiathPque Guy-L. Cot) and houses his vast personal archive.
